Washington Marriage License Fees Are Going Up — Here’s What Couples Need to Know

If you're getting married in Washington state, there’s an important update that could affect your wedding timeline and budget: marriage license fees are increasing statewide starting July 27, 2025.

Whether you're planning a celebration in Seattle, Tacoma, or elsewhere, here's everything you need to know about how much a marriage license costs in Washington, why it's going up, and how to plan accordingly.

Why Are Marriage License Fees Increasing?

In 2025, Washington State passed House Bill 1498, which adds a $100 surcharge to all marriage licenses issued on or after July 27, 2025. This increase will fund domestic violence co-responder programs across the state.

Because each county issues marriage licenses, the final cost is the county’s base fee plus the new $100 surcharge.

County-by-County: What the Fees Actually Look Like

Here are a detailed overview of the new fees in several popular western Washington counties. These new marriage license fees go into effect on July 27, 2025.

When Should You Apply?

Washington requires a 3-day waiting period before the license is valid for your ceremony, and the license itself is valid for 60 days.

  • If your wedding is on or after July 27, you may still be able to apply before the fee increase—just be sure to submit your application before the close of business on July 25, 2025, to lock in the current rate.

  • If your ceremony is more than 60 days away, you’ll need to pay the new fee.

Pro tip: If you’re planning a late July or early August wedding, apply as early as possible to save $100.

What You’ll Need to Apply

  • Valid government-issued photo ID

  • Both applicants present (or follow your county’s mail-in instructions)

  • Application fee (cash, card, or check depending on county)

  • Ceremony scheduled within 60 days

  • No witnesses or blood tests required

Inclusive & Accessible for All Couples

Washington issues marriage licenses to all couples 18 and older, regardless of gender identity or orientation. If you’re a queer, trans, or nonbinary couple, you’ll find affirming language and policies throughout the process. At Sheeco Weddings, we proudly center inclusivity, and we’re happy to help guide you through the process or with planning an accessible celebration for all your guests.

Why the Fee Increase Matters

While the $100 surcharge may seem like a sudden increase, it’s important to understand that this additional cost supports a vital cause. The increase comes from House Bill 1498, passed by the Washington State Legislature, which directs the extra revenue to fund domestic violence co-responder programs. These programs provide trained professionals who respond alongside law enforcement to domestic violence incidents, offering specialized support and resources to survivors. So, even if you end up paying the higher fee, your contribution helps make Washington communities safer and more supportive for those in need.

Final Thoughts: Plan Ahead and Save Where You Can

The good news? You still have time to apply before the fee increase takes effect. Even if you miss the cutoff, knowing what to expect can help you plan your budget with confidence.
