How Many People Fit at a Wedding Table? A Simple Guide for Planning Your Reception Layout
One of the most common questions we hear from engaged couples during the planning process is:
“How many people can fit at each wedding table?”
It’s a great question—and it makes a huge impact on the flow, comfort, and overall feel of your wedding reception. Whether you're planning an intimate micro-wedding or a large 200+ guest celebration, choosing the right wedding table sizes (and knowing how many guests comfortably fit at each) is essential to creating a smooth, enjoyable dinner experience.
At Sheeco Weddings, we’ve planned weddings of every size and style across the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Here’s our go-to guide for how many guests fit per table—plus our favorite layout tips that we use for real weddings every week.
Round Tables
Round tables are a wedding classic. They encourage conversation and provide great flow, especially when space allows for wide aisles and a generous dance floor. You’ll find them at most venues and rental companies, typically in 48", 60", or 72" sizes.
48” Round Table — Seats 6 to 8 Guests
This smaller round table is perfect for cozy gatherings, a kids' table, or tight event spaces. It provides ample space for place settings and a small centerpiece without feeling cramped.
60” Round Table — Seats 8 to 10 Guests
The 60” round table is by far the most popular choice for wedding receptions—and for good reason. It comfortably seats 8 guests, allowing plenty of space for place settings, chargers, and a beautiful centerpiece without feeling crowded. While some venues or planners might suggest squeezing in 10 guests at a 60” round, we don’t typically recommend it. It can feel tight, especially for adult guests during a plated or family-style meal. Seating 9 is sometimes doable—particularly if the group includes kids—but for the best guest experience, we say stick to 8 whenever possible.
72” Round Table — Seats 10 to 12 Guests
For larger guest counts or venues with ample space, 72" rounds are often used. These tables can seat up to 12 people, though we typically recommend sticking to 10 to avoid elbow-bumping and ensure guests can reach everything on the table—especially for family-style service.
Rectangular Tables
Rectangular tables, also known as banquet tables, bring a different vibe to your reception and are perfect for any type of wedding. We see them used a lot for head tables, family-style meals, or farm-to-table weddings. They create a more communal feel and work beautifully in long rows, inside tents, or barn venues.
6-Foot Rectangle (30” x 72”) — Seats 6 to 8 Guests
Seats 3 guests per side and 1 at each end. Best used in tighter spaces, for buffet service, or for vendor meals.
8-Foot Rectangle (30” x 96”) — Seats 8 to 10 Guests
Seats 4 guests per side and 1 at each end. This is the standard banquet table for many venues and can be lined up end-to-end to create long family-style tables. We often use these for head tables, especially with a backdrop or hanging installation behind them.
Design Tip: These tables have less width than rounds, so stick with low-profile centerpieces like garland runners, taper candles, or bud vases to avoid crowding the space.
Square Tables
Square tables are less commonly used, but they’re a gorgeous option for lounge-style receptions, intimate weddings, or VIP seating. They also photograph beautifully from above and allow for a balanced place setting layout.
36” Square — Seats 4 Guests
Ideal for cocktail-style receptions, lounge areas, or breakout dinner zones. Also, a cute option for sweetheart tables if you want a square look.
48” Square — Seats 8 Guests
With 2 guests per side, this creates a cozy yet structured setup for smaller receptions or design-forward layouts.
60” Square — Seats 8 to 10 Guests
A stylish, bold alternative to round tables that offers just as much functionality for seated dinners.
WEDDING TABLE LAYOUT TIPS FROM SHEECO WEDDINGS
As eco-conscious wedding planners, we’ve seen how the right table layout can improve not just guest comfort, but reduce waste, support accessibility, and enhance the atmosphere. Here are a few of our favorite expert tips when designing your reception seating:
1. Choose Comfort Over Maximum Capacity
Just because a table can fit 10 doesn’t mean it should. Prioritize elbow room, visual appeal, and ease of movement—especially if you want to encourage conversation.
2. Leave Space Between Tables
For seated dinners, we recommend leaving 5 to 6 feet between round tables and at least 60 inches between rectangular tables. This allows servers and guests to move freely without crowding.
3. Consider Your Meal Style
Plated meals allow for slightly tighter spacing, since guests don’t need to pass dishes.
Family-style or buffet dinners require more room for serving platters and easier access to and from the tables.
4. Keep Accessibility in Mind
Always make space for wheelchair users, elderly guests, and families with strollers. Avoid creating bottlenecks near entrances or restrooms.
